Testing and Publishing Loop Versions

Review a test version, run a test, make a version live, and read a loop's version history.

A loop can hold two versions at once: the live version, which every manual and scheduled run uses, and a test version, which holds changes that are not live yet.

A build or edit in Loop Studio creates a test version. The live version keeps running until someone with edit access makes the test version live.

Before you begin

  • Making a version live requires edit access on the loop. Without it, the Make it live button is unavailable and reads “You need edit access to publish this loop.”

  • Manual and scheduled runs use the live version for as long as the test version exists.

  • On the loops list, a loop that holds a test version is grouped under Ready to test. Editors also see New version to test on the row.

Reviewing a test version

  1. Open the loop. A strip above the loop reads “A test version is waiting”, names who built it, and states whether it has been tested.

  2. Select View test version.

  3. The strip changes to VIEWING TEST · vN and names how many steps were added and updated, and what changed in the loop’s description.

  4. Select Back to live to return to the live version.

While you are on the test version, the loop’s address carries it, so a copied link opens on the test version.

Running a test

  1. Open the test version. The action at the top right of the loop page reads Test.

  2. Select Test. Caddi asks which Loop Studio chat should watch the run.

  3. Select Start a new chat to open the run dialog, set any input values the run needs, and start the test. Selecting an existing chat opens that chat without starting a run.

The test uses the test version, and its result is reviewed in Loop Studio. On the live version the same action reads Run and uses the live version. See How to Run your Loops.

Making a version live

  1. Open the test version and select Make it live.

  2. In Make vN live?, check each input. Every input is listed with its Current value beside its New value, grouped under Only yours and Everyone’s.

  3. For each input that changed, select the value to use going forward. Select all above either column applies that column to every changed input.

  4. Scroll to the end of the list.

  5. Select Make vN live.

The new version replaces the live automation immediately and is used for all future runs, for everyone with access to the loop. The loop page then returns to the live version.

Making a version live discards other people’s test input values. Their live values are not affected.

Restrictions

  • Edit access on the loop. Without it, the confirmation is unavailable.

  • A value for every input. An input with none is marked This input needs a value, and the footer lists the inputs still to set. Use the new version’s value, or set one in the loop’s Inputs, then publish.

  • A review of the input list. The confirmation becomes available once the list has been scrolled to the end.

A successful test run is not required. When the test version has not completed one, the dialog shows “This version has not completed a successful test run yet. Are you sure you want to make it live?” and the confirmation stays available.

Version history

Version history holds every version that has been live, with the loop’s description and diagram as they were at that version.

  1. Open the loop and select Loop settings at the top right to open the settings rail.

  2. Select Open on the Version history row. The row gives the number of versions, and appears once the loop has a version with a description.

  3. The page is headed Version history and carries a pill reading Live · vN or vN · Earlier version, with a strip reading “Read only. Runs always use the live version, vN.”

  4. Select a version on the line down the left edge. The line expands while the pointer rests on it or it holds keyboard focus, newest at the top; the arrow keys step one version at a time, and Home and End jump to either end.

  5. Read the version in the left column, headed How this loop works on the live version and How this loop worked on an earlier one, with the version number and the date and time it became live.

  6. On an earlier version, select Back to live to return to the top of the line.

The diagram on the right is marked against the version below it on the line. What changed gives how many steps were added and updated. The earliest version with a description is headed First version.

Selecting a version updates the address, so a copied link opens on that version. Drag the divider between the description and the diagram to change the split; the loop page opens at the same split.

A loop whose versions have no description shows “This loop has no versions with a description yet.”

Common questions

Does a test version change the live loop?

No. Manual and scheduled runs use the live version until the test version is made live.

Is a test run required before a version can be made live?

No. The dialog warns when the version has not completed a successful test run, and the action stays available. In Loop Studio, the Make it Live button in the test bar becomes available once the version on screen passes a test run.

Which version do scheduled runs use?

The live version. See How to Schedule your Loops.

Who can make a version live?

Anyone with edit access on the loop.

Can I read an earlier version after a new one is live?

Yes. Open Version history from the loop’s settings rail. Earlier versions are read only.
